Overview

Utah State University invites applications for a full-time, fiscal year (twelve month) appointment. The job is located primarily at the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station (UAES) Kaysville Research Farm. The successful applicant will manage the Kaysville research facility which is dedicated to horticultural and agronomic research projects with special emphasis in fruit crops.

 

This individual will be responsible for management of the facility, and work closely with university faculty, staff, and students, as well as employees working at that location. The successful will assist in the everyday duties and responsibilities of the farm and must be able to work flexible hours to accommodate intense activity times such as spring ground preparation/planting, harvest season, and special situations.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, manage, and keep records of farm facilities (field, greenhouse, and lab) in cooperation with UAES administration, faculty, and staff to enable effective research.
  • Assist with research programs. Set up irrigation systems and apply pest controls in and around plot areas. Maintain an appealing appearance.
  • Prepare land for research. Operate equipment carefully and effectively according to policies and laws. Ensure proper storage and handling of crop protection products.
  • Supervise the greenhouse facility.
  • Train employees in safe and proper equipment operation as well as assisting researchers in providing training to graduate students, and other employees.
  • Supervise harvesting and marketing of produce. Locate potential markets and packing plants; and negotiate transactions.
  • Supervise and perform maintenance and repairs of UAES equipment.
  • Provide maintenance schedule and keep records for all equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in an agriculture-related discipline.
  • Five years of crop production experience.
  • Experience supervising employees.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbal and written, with university faculty, staff, and students plus vendors.
  • Ability to operate and maintain common agricultural equipment.
  • The ability to maintain an appropriate Pesticide Applicator’s license (restricted use and other) or in process of obtaining a license within 6 weeks of starting the job.
  • Ability to receive and ship materials/products – may require evening and weekend availability.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in fruit crop research and/or production common to Utah.
  • Experience in a research setting.
  • More than five years of crop production experience.
  • Proficiency with tablets and smart phones and GPS guidance systems.
