Overview

The Clinician for the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a member of Counseling and Prevention Services (CAPS) and provides embedded services to the CVM community. This is a 12-month position with one month off during the summer, coordinated with the other embedded clinician.

 

This is a great opportunity for a flexible schedule as the CVM grows!  The schedule is flexible during the academic years (AY) 2026-2027 and 2027-2028.  During these academic years the clinician may work part-time or full-time. Beginning in Fall 2028, the position is anticipated to become a full-time, 40-hours/week, over an 11-month schedule. Depending on initial hours and clinical demand, the clinician may split their time between the CAPS main office and CVM, with a transition to fully embedded (100%) at CVM by AY 2028.

 

While assigned to the CVM, the Embedded Clinician works closely with the Wellness Program Lead for the CVM to develop and deliver wellness programming that supports CVM students, fosters a culture of wellness within the academic environment, and provides direct clinical services.

 

While working in the CAPS main office, the clinician functions as a generalist CAPS therapist and provides services to the broader student population. Responsibilities include individual therapy, crisis walk-in intervention, and triage consultations.

 

This position will be hired as either a Clinican I or Clinician II - see Qualifications section.

Responsibilities

Program coordination (30-40%):

  • In collaboration with the Wellness Program Lead for the CVM, develop and deliver student-centered wellness and prevention programing.
  • Assist with strategic planning and assessment activities related to student wellbeing and outcomes of wellness programming.
  • Support the planning and implementation of student orientation activities centered upon student wellbeing.
  • Collaborate with the CVM Student Services for student wellness activities.
  • Participate as a contributing member of the CVM Wellness Committee.
  • Provide input on curriculum development with attention to student wellbeing.

Clinical services (40-60%):

  • Provide individual therapy, clinical consultation (triage appointment), intake, assessment, and crisis interventions. May also provide group therapy.
  • Conduct drop-in hours for CVM students.
  • Prepare for sessions and maintain accurate and up-to-date records of clinical services.

Other professional responsibilities (20%):

  • May provide instructional support in the professional skills courses in the CVM degree curriculum.
  • Provide consultation to CVM faculty and staff regarding student mental health concerns.
  • Participate in administrative and professional activities for CAPS staff (e.g., weekly staff meeting).
  • May provide supervision to CAPS trainees.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • The Clinician for the CVM reports to the Executive Director of CAPS, with a secondary reporting line to the Dean for CVM. This position does not hold formal supervisory or administrative responsibilities.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The position will be hired as either a Clinician I or Clinician II based on the following qualifications:
    • For hire as a Clinician I:
      • A master's degree in a mental health field that prepares graduates for licensure (e.g., social work, mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy),
      • A provisional mental health license in Utah (e.g., CSW, ACMHC, AMFT), and
      • Eligible for independent licensure in Utah as a mental health provider within 2 years of hire date. If hired as a Clinician I, the individual must have secured a license for independent practice within 2 years of hire. (If hired at the Clinician I level, supervision will be provided by CAPS clinicians.)
    • For hire as a Clinician II:
      • A master's degree in a mental health field that prepares graduates for licensure (e.g., social work, mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy)
      • Current Utah licensure (or ability to secure licensure by hire date) that allows independent practice (e.g., LCSW, CMHC, LMFT)
  • For either level: 
    • Clinical experience working with young adults (ages 18-25).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Independent clinical license in the State of Utah.
  • Experience working in a university or other higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the unique mental health needs of veterinarians and veterinary students.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to exercise sound clinical and professional judgment and to demonstrate strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Generalist knowledge and experience in psychotherapy (including teletherapy).
  • Effective time management skills and ability to work independently as collaboratively within a team.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications and clinical documentation systems.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, networking, community-building, organizational, problem-solving, decision-making skills, with a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.

Counseling and Prevention Services (CAPS) is part of USU's Division of Student Success. CAPS has been accredited by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services (IACS) since 1996. Our mid-size team is composed of professionals from psychology, social work, and counseling. We have robust training programs, including a doctoral internship accredited by the American Psychological Association and practicum in clinical/counseling psychology.
