The hockey club coach is responsible for developing and implementing a successful men’s club ice hockey program by fulfilling specific responsibilities within the USU Campus Recreation Department. They are expected to collaborate as a team player with primary responsibilities of coordinating all aspects of the men’s club hockey program and adhering to all ACHA rules and regulations. The coach is also expected to foster student growth and development, serving as a mentor and advocate for personal development.

The duration of this position is from August through April. Renewal is contingent upon performance, funding, and program needs.

• In coordination with USU travel representatives and club officers, manage all administrative aspects of the program, including but not limited to: team travel (lodging, nutrition), competition scheduling within the allocated budget, coordination of practice times with the ice rink manager, and overall player safety and conduct during travel.
• Coach the team by attending all practices, games, and activities. Lead structured on-ice practices, facilitate off-ice instructional meetings (virtually or in person), provide video analysis and coaching feedback, and oversee strength and conditioning programming for both the in-season and off-season.
• Actively recruit qualified student-athletes who meet academic and institutional standards by:
  • Engaging in off-campus recruitment,
  • Communicating with prospective players through various channels,
  • Building relationships with youth and junior hockey coaches and general managers,
  • Coordinating on-campus visits.
• Create and maintain a team culture that supports academic, athletic, and personal success, aligned with the mission of the USU Men’s Ice Hockey Club.
• Identify, recruit, and supervise assistant coaches and other support staff.
• Assist with the preparation and management of the team’s operating budget. Seek additional revenue through sponsorships, donations, and fundraising efforts.
• Support operations by ordering team jerseys, merchandise, and promotional items. Manage fan merchandise sales and track associated revenue.
• Collaborate with club officers and marketing staff to enhance team visibility via:
  • Social media platforms,
  • Team website updates,
  • Broadcast quality oversight,
  • In-game promotions and campus outreach.
• Works with Campus Recreation staff as well as Student Affairs travel manager in scheduling and reserving all travel plans for the club's away games, tournaments, and events.
• Possess strong organizational and communication skills, capable of managing multiple responsibilities effectively.
• Actively engage in the broader USU community and encourage team participation in campus events and service opportunities when appropriate.
• Monitor player eligibility and support academic success through grade checks, study halls, and other academic support resources, following university guidelines.
• Maintain compliance with all ACHA and applicable conference rules, including submitting rosters, eligibility forms, and game scores in a timely manner.
• Work with governing body in the creation of the club's schedule including all home games, away games, and/or specialty tournaments.

The environment and physical requirements may change depending on the specific function of the work each department performs. Incumbents may be in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, in an office space, event space, or public space are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents may nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing).

Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Additionally, indoor or outdoor work environments may include being confined or in narrow spaces for periods of time. The incumbent may also be exposed to loud noises or vibrations from equipment, and conditions that may affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects up to 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
