Join the Merrill-Cazier Library's Access Services team in serving students, faculty, staff, and community members and fostering a welcoming hub for curiosity, collaboration, and community at USU.

 

The Library Manager (Operational) – Student Supervisor is responsible for the success and continuous improvement of the Access Services student employee program. Reporting to the Head of Access Services, this position provides leadership and operational oversight for the recruitment, training, supervision, scheduling, and development of hourly student employees. The position collaborates with library colleagues and university partners to support student success, maintain high-quality services, and improve workflows.

The typical work schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:00am-4:00pm; however, hours may vary based on library operating hours, the university calendar, holidays, and departmental needs.

 

Anticipated start date: August 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and operational oversight for the Access Services student employee program, including hiring, training, supervising, evaluating, scheduling, and supporting a team of 15–20 hourly student employees.
  • Develop, coordinate, and continuously improve student employee training programs that support workplace skills, library services, and student development, while sharing materials across the library.
  • Further student success by contributing to training program for student employees across the library.
  • Manage day-to-day operations, workflows, and service points supported by student employees, ensuring consistent service through effective scheduling, communication, and quality improvement practices.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student employee records, including hiring, training, evaluations, scheduling, and performance-related documentation.
  • Propose and develop updates to the policies and procedures of the unit related to student employees and contributes to developing unit-wide policies.
  • Stay current with technological and theoretical advancements in library science to adapt, adopt, or update library practices and services.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data to support assessment, operational planning, budget forecasting, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with students, faculty, staff, library departments, and university partners through committees and initiatives that support student success and service excellence.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field; or a bachelor's degree plus two years of relevant experience; or an associate degree plus four years of relevant experience; or six years of library experience.
  • Experience managing operational responsibilities, programs, projects, or workflows with demonstrated ability to prioritize work, exercise sound judgment, and adapt to changing needs.
  • Experience hiring, training, supervising, coaching, or developing employees or student staff.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and improving policies, procedures, or operational workflows.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, community members, and colleagues.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and organizational skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across a variety of audiences.
  • Proficiency with standard office software and business applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, and related technologies).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent relevant graduate degree.
  • Experience working in an academic or public library, particularly in an environment supporting student employees or higher education initiatives.
  • Experience forecasting, preparing, and monitoring operational budgets.
  • Experience developing assessment plans and using data to inform service improvements.
  • Experience leading projects, committees, or collaborative initiatives.

Work is performed indoors in an open office environment with shared cubicle workspaces. Employees are protected from weather and contaminants but may experience occasional temperature changes. The position requires prolonged sitting, frequent computer use and repetitive hand motions (such as typing), as well as regular walking, talking, and hearing. The position also requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of library materials and the ability to move loaded book carts.
