Incumbents in the Police Officer position enforce local, state, and federal laws, ordinances, and regulations and perform community service activities. Incumbents ensure a prompt response to calls for service and investigate and document incidents. Police Officers protect the campus and campus citizens through a proper balance of foot, bike, and vehicle patrol.

• Ensures a prompt response and a proper disposition to all calls for service.
• Prepares quality reports as assigned.
• Ensures that crimes are properly investigated and that evidence is properly gathered, reported, and preserved.
• Promotes the general safety of persons, property, and equipment through a proper balance of vehicle, foot and bicycle patrol.
• Facilitates the safe and smooth flow of traffic by directing traffic and enforcing traffic laws through citations and verbal warnings.
• Keeps the University community informed through appropriate public relations activities.
• Develops a relationship of trust by becoming personally acquainted with members of the campus community.
• Uses investigative skills to assist in investigations as directed by the Captain.
• Provides direct support to the Captain and other supervisors by completing special assignments and projects.
• Keeps the Captain informed of any issues sensitive to the department or the University.
• Fosters good interdepartmental relations by cooperating with other law enforcement agencies in information exchange.
• Maintains a thorough knowledge of rules, regulations, and laws applicable to current duties, department policies and procedures, University regulations, and police operations.
• Maintains physical readiness.
• Maintains certifications as needed for patrol work including firearms, radar/lidar, ACT, intoxilyzer, and pursuit driving.
• Provides building security by responding daily to unsecured doors and alarms; checks security of buildings on a daily basis when called or when situation seems amiss.
• Provides building security services as needed (i.e. during special events, times of emergency, or alert of imminent threats).
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

• Utah POST certification as a Law Enforcement Officer or ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire is required.
• Must be a U.S. citizen and be over the age of 21 at time of appointment.

This position requires moderate physical activity, including the handling of average weight objects up to 25 pounds and/or standing or walking more than four hours per day. Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Employees may be exposed to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. The work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
