The Department of Psychology at Utah State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position. We seek a Counseling Psychologist to engage in teaching, mentorship, and research activities. We particularly welcome candidates whose research complements or extends existing strengths in the department and college, including substance use assessment and intervention, evidence-based interventions, and/or health and health disparities. The successful candidate will join our APA-accredited Combined Clinical/Counseling Psychology Ph.D. specialization and contribute to undergraduate instruction.
This is a tenure-track, nine-month academic year position anticipated to begin in August 2027 and is not eligible for remote work. Review of applications will begin October 15, 2026 and will continue until the position is filled.

Responsibilities include conducting research and disseminating findings, and actively pursuing external funding to support a program of research. The successful candidate will teach graduate and/or undergraduate classes, including clinical supervision, and mentor graduate students within the combined clinical/counseling psychology specialization. The successful candidate will also contribute to emerging undergraduate programming and experiential learning opportunities related to behavioral health and applied psychological skills. They will also participate in specialization and department governance and contribute service to the department, college, university, and profession.

The Combined Clinical/Counseling Psychology specialization is an APA-accredited doctoral program with a 50-year history of training health service psychologists. The program follows a scientist-practitioner model and has longstanding strengths in evidence-based interventions, health, and health equity. For nearly four decades, the program’s American Indian Support Project has trained American Indian psychologists and hosted the Society of Indian Psychologists annual convention. Award-winning, nationally renowned faculty maintain active programs of research and provide doctoral training that integrates clinical and counseling psychology, with students receiving research, teaching, and applied training experiences designed to prepare them for careers in academic, research, and health-service settings.
The Department of Psychology at Utah State University is a research-intensive department within the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, with strengths spanning basic, translational, and applied psychological science. The department is entering a period of significant faculty growth, with five tenure-track faculty hires planned across four searches in 2026–27.
The department includes more than 30 faculty and offers doctoral training through four Ph.D. specializations: Behavior Analysis, Brain and Cognition, Combined Clinical/Counseling Psychology, and School Psychology. Faculty also contribute to USU's interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Neuroscience. Beyond the doctoral level, the department offers an Ed.S. degree (in-person) and an M.Ed. degree (online), along with B.S. degrees in Psychology and Behavioral Neuroscience, including an award-winning online Psychology program.
Faculty maintain active programs of research supported by federal and other external funding and collaborate extensively within the department, across the college, and throughout the university. Existing collaborations connect Psychology faculty with colleagues in areas including biology, human development and family studies, special education and rehabilitation counseling, nursing, speech and hearing sciences, kinesiology, economics, mathematics and statistics, sociology, and natural resources. The department values research that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries and creates opportunities for collaboration in areas such as behavioral and mental health, neuroscience, health and aging, intervention science, and emerging health technologies.
