Overview

The Department of History at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for a tenure-track, nine-month position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Philosophy. We are looking for a generalist with a specialization in Early Modern Philosophy, and experience in teaching Introduction to Philosophy, Ethics or applied ethics courses, and introductory courses in philosophy of religion or political philosophy. The successful applicant will teach in our general education program, which offers pre-disciplinary courses focused on big questions in the humanities with a focus on seminal texts and intensive instruction in writing. The department seeks a highly motivated teacher and researcher to join a vibrant community of scholars at our Logan campus. Teaching is the primary focus of this position, and the faculty member will be responsible for teaching six courses per year. The anticipated start date is August 2027.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching and effectiveness in research
  • Teach in our general education program
  • Contribute to the Philosophy Program’s lower-division and upper-division curricula
  • Mentor undergraduates in their studies in the philosophy program
  • Demonstrate commitment to high-quality teaching, mentoring, and meaningful educational opportunities
  • Contribute to service in the Program, Department, College, and University

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Philosophy by July 2027
  • Evidence of teaching excellence
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of teaching excellence, particularly in Early Modern Philosophy, Introduction to Philosophy, and courses in ethics or applied ethics
