Overview

Incumbents in the AV & Production Technician position provide hands-on technical support for classroom technology, audiovisual systems, and live event production. Working under the direction of the Senior Technical Coordinator, incumbents assist with the installation, setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of audiovisual and low-voltage technology used in classrooms, meeting spaces, events, performances, and other campus activities. Incumbents work closely with Information Technology (IT), faculty, staff, and other campus personnel to support integrated technology systems.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the installation, replacement, maintenance, and troubleshooting of classroom audiovisual and instructional technology systems.
  • Performs basic low-voltage installation work under direction, including pulling and routing cable, terminating and labeling cabling, installing equipment, mounting devices, organizing equipment racks, and assisting with system testing.
  • Assists with the installation and setup of displays, projectors, cameras, microphones, speakers, control systems, computers, videoconferencing equipment, network-connected audiovisual devices, and related technology.
  • Troubleshoots audiovisual and classroom technology and performs basic diagnostics and repairs under direction.
  • Works closely with Information Technology (IT) personnel to troubleshoot and support systems involving computers, networks, audiovisual devices, videoconferencing, and other integrated technologies.
  • Supports live events, meetings, performances, lectures, and other campus activities by setting up, operating, troubleshooting, and removing audiovisual and production equipment.
  • Assists with live sound reinforcement, including microphones, speakers, mixers, cabling, and related audio equipment.
  • Assists with stage and event lighting, including setup, placement, cabling, focusing, operation, and teardown of lighting equipment.
  • Assists with video production and broadcast systems, including cameras, displays, video switching, presentation systems, streaming, recording, and videoconferencing equipment.
  • Assists with stage, set, and production setup for events and performances.
  • Loads, transports, sets up, tears down, and properly stores audiovisual, staging, lighting, and event equipment.
  • Maintains organized equipment and work areas and assists with inventory, equipment inspection, cable management, documentation, and preventive maintenance.
  • Safely uses hand tools, power tools, ladders, test equipment, and other tools associated with audiovisual and low-voltage installation after appropriate training.
  • Follows established safety practices, technical standards, and University procedures while working in classrooms, event spaces, equipment rooms, and installation environments.
  • Works cooperatively with faculty, staff, students, presenters, performers, IT personnel, and other campus departments to help meet classroom and event technology needs.
  • Participates in training and develops technical skills in audiovisual systems, low-voltage installation, classroom technology, event production, IT-related technologies, and related areas.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in audiovisual technology, live events, theater, IT, electronics, construction, electrical work, low-voltage systems, broadcasting, or a related technical field is preferred but not required. An equivalent combination of education, experience, technical aptitude, and demonstrated ability to learn may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Interest in learning audiovisual technology, event production, low-voltage systems, IT, networking, and related technical skills.
  • Mechanical or technical aptitude and a willingness to work with tools, equipment, cabling, computers, and electronic systems.
  • Ability to learn new technologies, procedures, and technical concepts through hands-on instruction and independent practice.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions, diagrams, equipment documentation, and established procedures.
  • Ability to approach technical problems logically, troubleshoot issues, and recognize when additional assistance is needed.
  • Ability to safely use or learn to use common hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, and audiovisual equipment.
  • Ability to work independently after receiving instruction and as part of a technical or event production team.
  • Strong attention to detail, particularly when installing, connecting, labeling, testing, and storing equipment.
  • Good organizational and time-management skills.
  • Dependability and ability to complete assigned work with appropriate follow-through.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with IT personnel and other campus departments.
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings or weekends, based on event and installation needs.
  • Basic computer skills and an ability to learn new software and technology platforms.

Advertised Salary

Work is performed in classrooms, offices, auditoriums, event spaces, equipment rooms, and other campus facilities. Some assignments may occur in construction or installation environments. Employees are frequently required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, use hands and tools, and move or transport audiovisual and event equipment (up to 50 lbs). Employees may work from ladders or lifts when appropriately trained and authorized and may be exposed to loud sound, stage lighting, dust, and other conditions associated with technical installations and live events. Event and installation schedules may occasionally require work outside normal business hours.
