The Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Sciences at Utah State University is seeking to fill a full-time (9-month) tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Food Science program.  The role for this position is 50% research, 45% teaching, and 5% Service.  Applicants must have a PhD in Food Science or related area with experience and interest in food protein and enzyme chemistry, structure, and functionality. Candidates will be expected to establish an extramurally funded and nationally recognized program of research that complements or expands existing departmental research in the area of Food Science. The department has established research programs in the areas of dairy, meat, and confectionery science.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the department’s goal of identifying innovative science-driven solutions to food-related problems that affect people and communities of Utah and the world. 

The proposed start date is August 1, 2024.

The teaching responsibilities will include: 

• Food Chemistry. This is an upper-division and required course in our undergraduate program in Food Science. Graduate students may also register for this course.
• Food Proteins and Enzymes. This is a graduate-level course in the Food Science program.

Minimum Qualifications:

• PhD. in Food Science or related field.
• Research experience in food chemistry evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national/international conferences.
• Demonstrated ability in writing and publishing scientific papers.
• Commitment to teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
• Ability to communicate at a technical and non-technical level and with university faculty, staff, and students.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience in food protein and enzyme chemistry, structure, and functionality.
• Demonstrated record of funding from competitive federal and industry sources.
• Post-doctoral research.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor graduate students to degree completions.
• Experience teaching in the areas of food chemistry and food proteins and enzymes at the collegiate level.
• Demonstrated experience in face-to-face and online teaching.

The Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Sciences provides instruction to students seeking baccalaureate and graduate degrees in a variety of in-person and online programs. The department’s emphasis on fostering a collaborative and inclusive learning and working environment contributes to the success of our students and faculty. Faculty in our department work closely with faculty from Plant Soils and Climate, Bioengineering, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Psychology, Kinesiology, Applied Economics, and Applied Science, Technology and Education. The placement of our department in the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences supports a view of food and nutrition through the lens of agriculture and food systems.
