Overview

The Computer Science Department seeks an Academic Advisor who can be a strong, positive, and creative student advocate and who can communicate well with other stakeholders. The Computer Science Academic Advisor will advise and assist prospective and current undergraduate students in the development of academic plans and class schedules as well as assess academic level, attend to student academic inquiries, assist in the resolution of individual academic problems, and engage in proactive advising programs.


The Academic Advisor will work with the Department Head, Computer Science Academic Advisor Coordinator, Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, and USU campus stakeholders to provide effective and comprehensive academic advising to undergraduate students.

Responsibilities

  • Provides advising services in person, virtually, by email, or by phone
  • Provides accurate information related to curriculum, graduation requirements, and university policies and procedures
  • Creates semester-by-semester graduation plan in DegreeWorks and monitors students' progress toward the CS major
  • Provides information and strategies to utilize available campus resources and services
  • Assists students in making responsible and informed decisions impacting academic progress
  • Encourages and guides students as they define and develop realistic goals.
  • Reviews and approves completion of requirements for graduation in Computer Science
  • Initiates Computer Science program probation and dismissal correspondence with affected students
  • Makes appropriate referrals to other university and non-university resources
  • Maintains detailed records and documentation of advising interactions
  • Maintains confidentiality
  • Assists with College of Science on- and off-campus recruitment events 
  • Engages in ongoing professional training and development
  • Assists in the maintenance of undergraduate and advising sections of the CS departmental website
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advising-related work experience
  • Experience with USU Banner systems
  • Ability to work under pressure and in high-stress situations while maintaining professionalism
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting with a commitment to creating a collaborative environment
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Ability to serve diverse individuals through effective interpersonal and communication skills using various communication media
  • Proven experience in data collection, report generation, and data management
