Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate individual to join our university as a Debate Coach. The ideal candidate will bring a wealth of experience in debate coaching, a deep understanding of various debate formats, and a commitment to fostering a culture of critical thinking and ethical and effective communication.

Responsibilities

Coaching and Training:

  • Provide coaching to university debate team members, focusing on argumentation, research, delivery, and strategic thinking.
  • Develop and implement effective training programs to enhance students' debating skills and knowledge.             

Strategy and Case Development:

  • Assist students in formulating persuasive arguments, constructing cases, and developing debate strategies.

Tournament Preparation:

  • Coordinate and conduct practice debates to simulate tournament conditions.
  • Provide guidance on effective time management, organization, and debate styles.

Research and Resource Management:

  • Foster a culture of continuous research and analysis within the debate team.
  • Manage and organize debate-related resources.

Team Management:

  • Foster a positive and collaborative team environment that encourages teamwork, sportsmanship, and mutual respect.
  • Attend and supervise debate team activities, including practices, tournaments, and related events.

Mentorship:

  • Act as a mentor to debate team members, offering guidance on academic and personal development.
  • Provide support in identifying internship opportunities, scholarships, and other avenues for students' growth.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
  • Extensive experience in competitive debate with a proven track record of success in coaching
  • Strong knowledge of debate and familiarity with debate circuits
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to inspire and motivate students to achieve their full potential

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Dedication to promoting diversity and inclusivity within the debate team

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes.  The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.
