Overview

The Utah Children’s Project, as part of the ECHO Program, has an immediate opening for a Spanish-Speaking Study Coordinator (Research Technician III) to work as part of a large national children’s health study investigating environmental influences on child health and development. The Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program is an NIH-funded research study. This project will follow children from childhood through adolescence, working with other cohorts totaling more than 50,000 children from diverse backgrounds across the nation. The study focuses on five key pediatric outcomes that have a high public health impact: pre, peri, and postnatal health; upper and lower airways; obesity; neurodevelopment; and positive health.

 

Job Summary:

Coordinates technical and administrative details involved in the day-to-day operations of the Utah Children’s Project/ECHO Program. Coordinates the recruitment and enrollment process of program participants, particularly from diverse racial/ethnic groups, including Hispanic/Latino populations. The Study Coordinator works on all aspects of the project that involve interacting with subjects and collecting data and samples, with an emphasis on working with participants from diverse backgrounds. Assists the Principal Investigator and research team in achieving study integrity and objectives through the successful implementation and completion of protocols and procedures, including the preparation of study materials, communication with families, data collection, post-visit specimen handling, data entry, and other tasks related to project objectives.

 

This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefited position with occasional weekend and evening hours required as needed to accomplish study objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the daily operation of all assigned research activities, including recruitment, explaining and obtaining informed consent, study mailings, online surveys, in-person data collection, and follow-up of study participants, particularly from diverse and Spanish-speaking populations.
  • Contacts and recruits potential study participants at community outreach events. Travels to and presents study information at community events to conduct recruitment, particularly from diverse and Spanish-speaking populations. Assists in screening eligible participants.
  • Utilizes the study database to track participant and data collection flow.
  • Uses study knowledge and experience to help develop and implement study informatics and tracking tools.
  • Contacts study participants in Spanish or English to obtain or update informed consent, collect and verify data, answer project-related questions, and verify receipt/completion of study materials.
  • Conducts in-person and virtual study visits, including obtaining anthropometric measurements, cognitive assessments, biospecimen samples, and survey data.
  • Drives to study sites outside of USU, including home visits.
  • Ensures proper collection, processing, and shipment of specimens.
  • Assists in managing study visit equipment and clinic space.
  • Assists with maintenance and calibration of study and lab equipment.
  • Carries and transports study equipment and materials.
  • Assesses protocol for clarity, reviews inclusion/exclusion criteria, and clarifies concerns and questions with the Research Manager and/or Clinical Research Coordinator.
  • Creates, reviews, and edits research project-specific documents such as standard operating procedures (SOPs) and participant materials, based on study procedures and protocols.
  • Reviews and edits Spanish documents and translates English documents to Spanish.
  • Assists in compliance with protocol; managing quality control, completion reports, and submission of study-related documentation; preparing reports for project management.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings. Advises the team regarding specific study assignments and timelines.
  • Maintains relationships and communications with other research sites.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Recognizes, tracks, and reports adverse events (AEs) and protocol deviations. Reports serious AEs to the research managers, principal investigators, and IRB.
  • Maintains IRB and other project training and certifications.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. 
  • Spanish fluency (reading, writing, and speaking).
  • Demonstrated experience focused on multicultural diverse populations and working with diverse interdisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with children.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to function independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn new software programs.
  • Ability to effectively work in private home environment with internet access as needed and/or in office to meet study needs.
  • Experience working with diverse populations such as Hispanic/Latino population in Utah.
  • Ability to monitor complex recruitment and follow-up simultaneously and manage time to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to create a team-based environment and demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues, supervisors, and customers. 
  • Ability to come to well-reasoned conclusions, solutions, and approaches to problems. 

New Hire Training Requirements:

  • IRB CITI Course in the Protection of Human Research subjects certificate obtained within the first month of hire.
  • Bloodborne pathogen training obtained within the first month of hire.
  • USU compliance training within two months of hire.
  • Some departments may require IATA DGR training within six months of hire.
