Overview

The USU Athletics Academic Coordinator (Student Athlete Success Advisor) will support the academic needs of student-athletes in assigned sports and assist in the day-to-day operation of Student-Athlete Academic Services (SAAS). Sports will be assigned upon hiring.

 

The Academic Coordinator assists student-athletes with academic progress in areas including academic study skills and learning strategies; educates student-athletes on NCAA, conference, and institutional eligibility requirements; and, in conjunction with campus advisors, guides student-athletes on course and major selection and career planning. The Academic Coordinator meets with student-athletes on a regular basis to monitor academic progress and review eligibility status.  Additionally, the Academic Coordinator will provide detailed reports and updates to coaches, compile semester grade/eligibility reports, and assist with the preparation of each assigned team’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR). The Academic Coordinator participates in recruiting activities, orientation, and SAAS events.

 

This position reports to the Director for Student-Athlete Academic Services.

Responsibilities

ACADEMICS

  • Monitor admission process on all new incoming student-athletes for assigned sports
  • Assist in coordinating advising appointments with assigned student-athletes for course selection/registration
  • Monitor course selection for fulfillment of appropriate university course requirement fulfillment
  • Update coaches regularly with academic progress status
  • Serve as liaison between faculty/campus personnel and assigned student-athletes
  • Educate student-athletes on ACCESS/Banner registration, drops/adds, and other academic policies and procedures
  • Process end-of-term academic reports via Argos
  • Upload academic documents via Box

ELIGIBILITY

  • Monitor initial and transfer eligibility for incoming new student-athletes in assigned sports
  • Initiate Degree Progress Forms for Progress Towards Degree
  • Process and monitor continuing eligibility for assigned student-athletes
  • Timely communication with coaches regarding eligibility issues 

RECRUITING

  • Evaluate high school and college transcripts
  • Meet with official and unofficial prospective student-athletes in assigned sports
  • Provide recruits with information regarding becoming an Aggie and being a student-athlete at Utah State University
  • Highlight academic accomplishments of USU student-athletes 

OTHER

  • Process annual APR and GSR data for assigned sports
  • Maintain current and accurate roster of student-athletes in assigned sports
  • Assist with SAAS events
  • Other projects and programs as assigned (student-athlete development programming, etc.) 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in appropriate discipline
  • Working knowledge of NCAA eligibility rules and regulations (Bylaw 14)
  • Experience in academic support services of student-athletes
  • Experience with Academic Progress Rate and Graduation Success Rate process and submission

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and coaches
