Overview

The Carpenter assists or serves as a coordinator for projects, assists or directs teams as assigned by Foreman, and performs carpentry work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of campus facilities on assigned locations. The candidate accomplishes this by applying acquired skills and positive attitude in conjunction with advanced technical knowledge, the ability to analyze and understand unique project requests or customer concerns, and established leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares labor and materials estimates for repair and renovation projects.
  • Assists in monitoring, ordering, and maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinates projects and schedules work to ensure timely completion and quality standards, as needed.
  • Performs customer service duties by checking in and following up with customers and ensures that their needs are met.
  • Assists in the development and training of less-senior shop personnel.
  • Leads, guides, and trains other technicians in applicable procedures and techniques.
  • Coordinates and participates in various meetings and committees to enhance and develop the Facilities department and resources.
  • Repairs and maintains various parts of buildings by applying the necessary procedures and construction specialties in fixing: floors, windows, ceilings, roofs, walls, partitions, stairways and other structures on assigned locations.
  • Performs duties associated with a variety of new construction, remodeling, and repair projects including: insulation, cabinets, shelves, wood or metal frame walls, sheet rock, suspended ceilings, roofing, masonry, and concrete work.
  • Accomplishes a variety of finishing work by trimming, fitting and installing windows, doors, sheet rock, moldings, baseboards, paneling, laying laminated plastic counters and floor tile, attaching hinges, catches, and other finish work as required.
  • Prepares drawings and sketches for construction projects.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Cleans equipment, shop area, and worksite.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned such as assisting locksmiths in basic assignments.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four years of directly related work experience. Incumbents must possess journeyman skills and/or a license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable codes, standards and regulations.
  • Skill in the repair, maintenance, and construction techniques of all assignments common to the carpentry trade.
  • Skill in the use of various hand and power tools common to trade.
  • Mathematical computation skills.
  • Skill in estimating time and material requirements of work projects assigned.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Skill in troubleshooting and repairing all types of carpentry problems.
  • Ability to work without supervision.
  • Ability to create, read, understand, and build to specifications from blue prints and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to troubleshoot all types of construction problems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and customers.
