Utah State University’s Art + Design Department is seeking a full-time, nine-month tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art Education. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of teaching within a K-12 curriculum (or extensive, related experiences teaching these age groups), experience teaching in a university setting, ability to foster studio art-making skills in future educators, and demonstrate a commitment to mentoring and student success. The position is defined as 50% teaching, 40% research/creative activity, 10% service.

This is a tenure-track position beginning with the 2025-2026 academic year anticipated to start in August 2025.

• Initial teaching load to include:
  • Secondary Art Methods
  • Clinical Experience in Teaching
  • Student Teaching Supervision
  • Other art foundation courses as appropriate to department needs
• Supervise student teaching and clinical field experiences, including regular contact with both the students and the mentor teachers. 
• Participate in the annual portfolio review of BFA Art Education students. 
• Mentor undergraduate student projects and grants (research, creative, and/or pedagogical). 
• Recruitment activities for Art Education. 
• Student advising. 
• Serve on department, college, and university committees. 
• Create and produce creative activity/research to remain current in the profession. 
• Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:

• Terminal degree (MFA art or PhD art education) with substantial K-12 education background/experience.
• Experience teaching art with students grades K-12, preferably in public or private schools. 
• Demonstrated passion and dedication to student success. 
• Be well-versed in contemporary pedagogical issues and practices related to school-based art teaching. 
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel locally/regionally to supervise pre-service student teachers. 
• Cleared background check (BCI/FBI) upon hire. 

Preferred Qualifications:

• MFA with additional graduate degree (M.Ed., PhD, etc.) in art education.
• 2 or more years of teaching experience at the university level. 
• Valid teacher certification/lincensure in art (K-12) and working knowledge of state licensing requirements, curriculum standards, and resources. 
• Experience supervising and providing evidence-based, constructive feedback to pre-service student teachers. 
• Experience advising/mentoring undergraduate students, especially original undergraduate research, creative projects, and educational initiatives.

Art + Design Department

Housed in the Caine College of the Arts at USU and accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), the Department of Art + Design has a century-long history and a suite of well-established and highly regarded programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The department features approximately twelve exhibitions a year in the beautifully remodeled Tippetts and Eccles Galleries; this includes a national juried exhibition for current BFA and MFA students. In addition to programs on the Logan Campus, the department has faculty on the USU Eastern campuses in Price and Blanding, Utah, and delivers courses by electronic and hybrid instructional systems to USU’s six other regional campuses and numerous county centers around the state.
