Overview

Are you passionate, energetic, and ready to make an impact? We’re looking for three creative and dynamic student counselors to join our Startalk Mandarin Program team! This is a unique opportunity to work in a fun, engaging environment while helping students learn Mandarin Chinese.

Schedule:
• 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM / 1:00 PM – 5:30 PM (8 hours per day).


Location:
• USU Salt Lake Center, Taylorsville, Utah.


Camp Dates:
• July 7 – July 11, 2025 (on-site).

 

Responsibilities

As an on-site Day Counselor, your primary responsibility will be to create and lead exciting activities for students in a Mandarin-speaking environment during the camp. The position requires advanced-high Mandarin reading and speaking skills and offers the chance to:

  • Assist teachers and students in the classroom.
  • Organize and supervise engaging activities.
  • Monitor and support students' progress.
  • Communicate in Mandarin Chinese with students at least 90% of the time.
  • Attend the entire camp, including training, from July 7–11, 2025 (8:30 AM–5:30 PM with a lunch break).
  • Complete 4 hours of online training and activity planning before the camp.
  • Attend a half-day in-person orientation during the first week of July (paid hourly).
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment to encourage active participation.
  • Carry out other tasks as assigned by the Program Director.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Program requires US Citizenship or permanent residency.
  • No affiliation with the Confucius Institute or Chinese government grants (for yourself or your employer).
  • Demonstrate advanced-high Chinese language proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Have excellent English communication skills for working with high school students and teammates.
  • Basic video editing and social media posting skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A passion for social media and multimedia (short videos, photos, etc.).
  • Expertise in group games and activities for teens.
  • Unique talents that resonate with high school students
  • Experience using AI tools and educational tech apps
  • Enjoy group and outdoor activities with students.

The environment and physical requirements may change depending on the specific function of the work each department performs. Incumbents may be in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, in an office space, event space, or public space are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents may nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing).

 

Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Additionally, indoor or outdoor work environments may include being confined or in narrow spaces for periods of time. The incumbent may also be exposed to loud noises or vibrations from equipment, and conditions that may affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects up to 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
