Overview

Utah State University has four seven-year multi-million dollar Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program (GEAR UP) grants from the U.S. Department of Education to significantly increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.  As part of this national initiative, GEAR UP at Utah State University is providing academic preparation services to students and their families in partner school districts serving low-income communities.

 

The GEAR UP Marketer II is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing marketing strategies in order to promote the GEAR UP programs.  Campaigns support GEAR UP student recruitment efforts, publicize University sponsored activities and events, and persuade patron support.  The GEAR UP Marketer will write and/or edit marketing and promotional materials such as brochures, flyers, and other documents; may coordinate special marketing events; and may be a media contact.

 

Employment is contingent upon annual funding from a federal sponsor.

Responsibilities

  • Writes marketing copy for a wide range of formats, including print, websites, and social media.
  • Collaborates with graphic artists, web developers, printers and others to develop marketing materials.
  • Creates and executes marketing strategies, plans, campaigns, and projects.
  • Oversees placement of print, web, and social media advertising.
  • Approves copy; ensures proper grammatical standards.
  • Assembles and creates content for weekly emails and monthly e-newsletters.
  • Helps maintain GEAR UP program website.
  • Responds to requests for information from the media and constituents; distributes promotional materials, including flyers, brochures and press kits; prepares and presents information to internal and external sources.
  • Plans or assists with planning and coordinating special events such as GEAR UP Greenpower initiative, outreach and community events, tours, student/parent conferences, banquets, exhibits, product or service fairs, and/or other GEAR UP events.
  • Conducts, or assists in conducting portions of market research activities, including analyzing data, to identify targeted populations, including potential underwriters and sponsors, and to identify the appropriate media for distribution of promotional information.
  • Maintains database records and files including mailing and GEAR UP partner lists and publication distribution information.
  • Maintains the GEAR UP online student event calendar.
  • Delegates, writes, edits, designs the GEAR UP quarterly newsletter.
  • Take notes at weekly conference call meetings for each cohort, then sending minutes via email to GEAR UP employees.
  • Create content for the GEAR UP blog.
  • Maintain the GEAR UP administration directory.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, public relations, communications or related field plus two years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of marketing media and funding sources.
  • Ability to gather data, analyze information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate media activities and special events.
  • Ability to manage and impart information to a range of clientele and/or media sources.
  • Database and records management skills.
  • Knowledge of marketing strategies, processes, and available resources.
  • Basic knowledge of writing for search engine optimization (SEO) and social media.
  • Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
  • Computer skills, including Word, Access, PowerPoint, Excel and Adobe Cloud.
