Overview

Assures the security of campus buildings and equipment by performing Locksmith Journeyman-level services for all University buildings with an electronic access control emphasis.  Performs complex work in the efficient installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic access control and systems according to the shop's overall responsibilities.  Accomplishes this by applying journeyman-level electronic skills in conjunction with technical knowledge and following established guidelines. Works as a member of a team on various projects or assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Performs administrative functions of the lock shop by maintaining records and access controls to ensure accurate and current information.
  • Cuts, duplicates, programs, and issues keys or proximity cards according to requests for various campus entities in coordination with supervisor and university police.
  • Installs locks to include electronic access control systems.
  • Maintain and repair of locks, electronic access, and locking mechanisms on campus.
  • Locates and corrects defects in electronic access control assemblies and systems, and makes appropriate repairs.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on various types of lock systems and electronic equipment, by replacing parts, testing, lubricating, adjusting, and aligning equipment as needed.
  • Performs combination of cylinder pinning.
  • Interprets keying guidelines: uses appropriate discretion and special knowledge of lock systems to preserve the integrity of the University’s master key system while meeting customer requests.
  • Provides limited technical guidance to less senior technicians.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies: promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 4 years current and related work experience between Locksmithing and access control.
  • Current and directly related experience in locksmithing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Commercial/Institutional electronics experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of keys, keyways, key manufacturers, key duplication machines, and key duplication techniques.
  • Current and directly related experience in locksmithing.
  • Knowledge of electronic principles and theory.
  • Knowledge of electronic circuits and components.
  • Skill in reading electronic schematics and wiring diagrams to perform testing and troubleshooting of circuits.
  • Knowledge of function, grades, and the methods of installation of locking hardware and electronic access control systems.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Skill in the use of various hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Skill in working with tolerances of 1/1000th of an inch.
  • Ability to cut and issue keys, re-key, install and repair locks and hardware.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and customers.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to learn key codes and master keying techniques.
