Overview

The Senior Associate Athletics Director at Utah State University provides senior leadership to the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, ensuring achievement of strategic objectives and operational goals. Serving as a key member of the executive leadership team, the Senior Associate AD will play a pivotal role in overseeing internal operations across key areas such as Capital Projects, Facility Operations, Event Operations, Equipment Management and sport oversight. Additionally, the Senior Associate AD will support fundraising initiatives, collaborate with various internal and external stakeholders, and act as a representative for the Athletic Director on several committees and institutional matters.

 

The Senior Athletics Director will work closely with the Vice President and Director of Athletics to execute the department’s strategic priorities while providing leadership within the sport supervisor team. This position also carries substantial responsibility for supporting flagship sports programs and the broader execution of Utah State Athletics' strategic plan.


This position requires strict adherence to all NCAA, Mountain West Conference, and PAC-12 regulations, as well as university policies. The Senior Associate AD must ensure compliance with all institutional guidelines, NCAA rules, and regulations governing Division I athletics.

Responsibilities

Sport Program Leadership:

  • Sport Oversight and Guidance: Provide direct oversight and support to coaching staff across designated teams, collaborating with head coaches to define program goals for team performance and athlete development.
  • Coaching and Staff Supervision: Mentor and support head coaches, ensuring alignment with university values, NCAA rules, and departmental expectations. Provide professional development opportunities to coaching staff, establishing goals and evaluating performance.
  • Student-Athlete Support and Development: Oversee student-athlete welfare by ensuring support in academics, mental health, and personal development. Foster a balanced approach to academics and athletics.
  • Compliance: Ensure adherence to NCAA and institutional policies related to eligibility, academics, recruiting, and student-athlete welfare.
  • Performance and Program Assessment: Regularly assess team and athlete performance, offering strategic guidance to enhance competitiveness and operational effectiveness.
  • Facilities and Equipment Oversight: Ensure that facilities are maintained and equipped to meet NCAA standards and operational needs.
  • Work collaboratively with university partners and units.
  • Event Logistics: Manage event logistics, including travel arrangements and game-day operations, ensuring compliance with NCAA policies.

Capital Projects:

  • Lead the development and execution of Utah State Athletics' Facility Master Plan.
  • Oversee capital projects, ensuring alignment with department and university priorities. Provide direction for advancement and development fundraising efforts and develop funding models for new facility projects.
  • Work collaboratively with university partners and units.
  • Collaborate with University Capital Planning, Advancement, Development, and Public Safety to manage budgets and timelines for facility-related initiatives.

Equipment Room Oversight:

  • Leadership and Supervision: Directly supervise the Head Equipment Managers and equipment staff, ensuring operational efficiency, financial accuracy and high-quality service across athletic teams.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop operational strategies and policies for equipment management, including inventory, procurement, and distribution, aligned with the department’s broader goals.
  • Compliance and Safety: Ensure that all equipment meets NCAA and institutional standards for safety and performance.

Event Management Leadership:

  • Event Supervision: Oversee the Director of Event Management and the event operations team, providing leadership, mentorship, and performance evaluations.
  • Event Planning: Guide the planning and execution of athletic events, ensuring efficient coordination across all operational components, including logistics, staffing, and venue preparation.
  • Post-Event Review: Supervise post-event evaluations and feedback to refine future event planning processes and improve operational efficiencies.

Budget Oversight:

  • Manage the internal unit’s budget, including development, decision-making, and fiscal oversight of allocated resources.
  • Evaluate trends in budget performance, ensuring responsible resource management across capital projects, equipment, and event operations.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Event Management to create and manage event-related budgets, ensuring financial control while maintaining high standards for event quality.

Qualifications

Minimum/Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in administration.
  • Proven experience in senior management roles, such as Athletic Director, Senior Associate AD, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience in managing and leading a diverse team of professionals.
  • Job offer is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience at a NCAA Power 5 institution.
  • Proven leadership in strategic planning and facilities master planning.
  • Prior experience with NCAA compliance, NIL program development, and managing large-scale fundraising efforts.
  • Proven experience overseeing Capital Projects at a NCAA Division I institution.

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes.  The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.


Occasional evening and weekend work will be required, including for athletic events, meetings, and travel. Ability to travel as necessary for events, meetings, and institutional functions.
