Overview

Under direct supervision, transports furniture and office equipment within university campus and off campus as directed. Routinely interacts with all constituents in the campus community. Ability to work 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM with occasional nights, weekends and holidays to accommodate university events.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and remove furniture, equipment, and related items for special events and classroom use as necessitated.
  • Locate and relocate applicable office, lab and event equipment.
  • Load and unload furniture and related materials onto and off trucks, ensuring that appropriate padding and straps are used to prevent damage.
  • Operate forklifts, mechanical tailgates, and mechanical platforms to facilitate loading and unloading materials. Ability to safely and effectively back a pickup truck and 20 foot trailer into tight spaces using complex maneuvers.
  • Ensures that the budget expenditures are maintained within the authorized budget.
  • Distributes goods to and from salvage, storage, surplus and central receiving.
  • Operates mid-sized to large moving trucks in the transportation of moving materials, as necessary.
  • Responsible for hiring and training a full time position and multiple part time positions.
  • Maintains records of employees, equipment and maintenance activities.
  • Schedules work assignments to ensure deadlines are met and inventory is monitored.
  • Use various applications and devices to track the workflow. 
  • Works with customers in providing information and resolving issues relating to products and services; responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction.
  • Performs general maintenance, custodial work, and trash and snow removal.
  • Meet all industry and university safety requirements by ensuring proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience or and associate degree/vocational training.
  • Valid driver’s license to perform essential job responsibilities, such as driving university vehicles and transporting material
  • Ability to gain forklift certification

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in organizing schedules
  • 1 year of a similar moving operation experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Reading, communication, math and problem solving skills equivalent to a high school education or GED.
  • Ability to safely and efficiently operate mechanical forklifts, tailgates, platforms, moving trucks and truck with trailer.
  • Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects.
  • Ability to read, understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Basic computer and organizational skills (i.e. Microsoft and Google products).

The environment for this classification varies and includes office environments and outdoor environments.  In the office environment, employees are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily temperature changes.  In the outdoor environment, employees are not protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. The employee may also be exposed to loud noises, vibrations from equipment, and atmospheric conditions that may affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.

 

This position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting (up to 75 lbs.) and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects.
