Overview

The Agriculture Literacy Coordinator, within Utah State University Extension, is responsible for integrating research-based agriculture topics into elementary, junior high, and high school curricula in Sevier County. This position aims to enhance student engagement by utilizing agriculture as an effective teaching tool, aligning with common core standards. The coordinator will work collaboratively with teachers, county officials, and Extension faculty to develop, implement, and track agricultural educational programs across schools, promoting lifelong learning and community involvement.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and monitor agriculture-themed lessons across county schools, aligning with curriculum standards.
  • Track and record lesson implementation, student test scores, and teacher feedback.
  • Compile and submit monthly reports on program progress and an end-of-year impact report by December 31, 2025.
  • Engage regularly with county commissioners, education stakeholders, and Extension faculty to identify desired subjects and program priorities.
  • Develop, maintain, and organize a resource library with kits, videos, books, and other educational materials.
  • Procure necessary supplies, order materials, and manage inventory effectively.
  • Seek and apply for grants to support program initiatives within school districts.
  • Maintain accurate financial records, including expenditures and travel expenses.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the USU Sevier County Extension Director.

Goals:

  • Successfully integrate agriculture topics into a designated number of classrooms, enhancing student interest and achievement.
  • Achieve measurable improvements in student test scores related to implemented lessons.
  • Establish a sustainable resource library and secure funding through grants to support ongoing program activities.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with teachers, county officials, and Extension staff to continually refine program offerings.
  • Present documented evidence of program impact to stakeholders, including county commissioners, by the conclusion of the project year.

Qualifications

  • Interest in and knowledge of agriculture and related sciences.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and volunteers in hands-on educational activities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing reports, resources, and inventories.
  • Reliable transportation to and from worksite
  • Capacity to work independently and demonstrate initiative.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.

The environment and physical requirements may change depending on the specific function of the work each department performs. Incumbents may be in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, in an office space, event space, or public space are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents may nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing). Must have the abilitiy to lift up to 25 pounds.

 

Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Additionally, indoor or outdoor work environments may include being confined or in narrow spaces for periods of time. The incumbent may also be exposed to loud noises or vibrations from equipment, and conditions that may affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects up to 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
