Overview

USU Blanding is seeking applicants for an Academic Advisor to advise prospective, current, and former students as part of the NASNTI (Native Americans Servicing Non-Tribal Institutions) II Grant. Incumbents in the Academic Advisor position advise and assist students in the development of academic plans and class schedules as well as assess academic level, attend to student academic inquiries, assist in the resolution of individual academic problems, and advise on academic program changes. Incumbents also prepare students’ graduation applications for Dean approval in DegreeWorks or assist students in semester-by-semester planning in preparation for declaring a major. This position is contingent upon grant funding.

Responsibilities

  • Advise students individually and/or with groups regarding academic core and/or departmental requirements, appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedures, and campus resources.
  • Assist students with the identification of long-term goals and career plans.
  • Work to position students to meet requirements for graduation within appropriate periods of time while preparing them to meet future goals.
  • Advise special populations of students within the scope of responsibility, such as new or transfer students, undeclared majors, minority groups, etc., assisting in the exploration of academic programs and focusing on academic direction, procedures, policies, and available resources.
  • Maintain advising records and confidential student evaluation records.
  • Utilize USU information systems to support the delivery of advising services.
  • Serve on appropriate department, college, and/or campus advisory committees.
  • Perform related duties as required or deemed necessary to meet the Academic Advising goals within the Advisor's scope of responsibility.
  • Concurrent Enrollment Advising
  • Conduct regular grade checks and manage academic progress interventions.
  • Assist with planning and attending university or school district events.
  • Collect, track, and report student data.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and people skills
  • Strong communication skills, being able to communicate effectively with students, staff, and the public from diverse cultural, social, economic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, especially Excel and Word.
  • Must be a hands-on, self-directed, organized, and conscientious individual.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Effective analytical problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to establish and build constructive relationships, especially with students.
  • Attention to detail and quality-focused.
