Overview

Incumbents in the Landscaper series install, repair, and maintain the landscaping and grounds on the USU campus, including snow removal. The Landscaper III reports to a Landscaper Lead. This classification trains, guides, and oversees small work crews.

Responsibilities

  • Plants and maintains trees, shrubs, flower beds, etc.
  • Applies pesticides to rid grounds of pests, such as mosquitoes, wasps, ticks, and others.
  • Applies fertilizers.
  • Prunes trees, trims shrubs, and pulls weeds.
  • Rakes and mulches the grounds as needed.
  • Mows and trims lawns.
  • Removes snow from sidewalks and doorways.
  • Responds to on-call situations for snow removal and landscape emergencies.
  • Trains and directs a small work crew.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Maintains and repairs all irrigation on campus grounds.
  • Provides on-call support outside regular hours as part of a rotating duty roster.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four years of experience in the green industry; or an associate degree/technical training in a related field plus two years of experience; or a bachelor’s degree in a related field is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of applicable safety procedures.
  • Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive and/or confidential issues.
  • Knowledge of greenhouse operations, propagation methods, chemical applications, insect/disease control, plant nutrition, and pruning methods.
  • Skilled in operating snow removal equipment.
  • Skilled in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Skilled with employee development processes and performance management.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short and long-range goals.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Knowledge of various flowers and plants.
  • Ability to design landscape renovations.
  • Knowledge of plants, landscape use, and cultural requirements.
  • Ability to diagnose plant conditions and cultural needs and recommend treatment for problems.
  • Knowledge of pesticides.
  • Knowledge of irrigation equipment and methods.
  • Knowledge of soil types, slope, and drainage.

This position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions, such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting.  Employees work outside and will not be protected from weather conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat for extended periods. 

Employees are exposed to hazardous conditions including, noise, vibrations from machinery, moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, elevated work spaces, such as scaffolding, and atmospheric conditions that can affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.
