Overview

As part of a 4-year federal grant (Adolescents and Communities Empowered – ACE) to Utah State University, a youth educator will join two other Salt Lake County facilitators in implementing healthy relationship and sexual education programming targeted to at-risk youth. The geographical service area is Salt Lake County. The position is .75 FTE. Excellent University benefits are included. (see https://hr.usu.edu/benefits/). Continued employment is contingent upon on-going grant funding. Facilitators must have a strong desire to work with youth and promote healthy relationships. Curriculum-based courses will be taught in-person and virtually in partnership with alternative high-schools, behavioral health centers, correctional facilities, and other youth-serving organizations throughout the service area. 

 

This position is telework eligible within the state of Utah.

Responsibilities

Facilitator will be responsible for all aspects of programming within the geographical areas for grant sponsored projects. A list of major responsibilities includes, but is not limited to:

  • Teach teen pregnancy prevention courses, in-person and possibly online
  • Recruit and retain community partners; recruit youth participants
  • Coordinate food, incentives, and other programmatic supports
  • Facilitate local evaluation and data collection
  • Maintain programmatic and financial records
  • Participate in regular trainings
  • Follow Domestic Violence Prevention, Human Subjects, and Performance Measurement protocols
  • Establish community partnerships and coordinate with county Extension faculty to support county relationship education initiatives
  • Adhere to terms and conditions of the grant proposal and sponsor guidelines

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in family studies, social work, sociology, education, psychology or four years of related experience. 
  • Experience in planning and delivering family life education
  • Experience leading groups and/or teaching youth
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Power Point) and email
  • Flexible schedule and ability to teach courses during the day, evenings, and Saturdays
  • Reliable transportation to travel (mileage will be reimbursed by the grant)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience collaborating and partnering with community-based, youth-serving organizations
  • Experience working professionally with youth
  • Proficient in Spanish
  • 3+ years of experience teaching family-life related programing or experience leading groups
  • Have a Certified Family Life Education endorsement

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Social skills to effectively interact and network with community members and agencies
  • A strong desire to work with youth and promote healthy relationships
  • Ability to work well alone and as part of a team

The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions. This position requires moderate physical effort.   • BS/BA: Human Development and Family Studies;
  • MS: Human Development and Family Studies 
  • MMFT: Master of Marriage and Family Therapy (non-thesis degree)
  • MHDFS: Master of Human Development and Family Studies (non-thesis degree);
  • PhD in Human Development and Family Studies. A Gerontology Certificate Program also is administered by the department.

The department has 30 faculty members, over 300 undergraduate majors, and over 80 graduate students.

 

The department is committed to optimizing the lives of individuals, families, and communities through excellence in research, teaching, and extension. Our nationally recognized faculty lead research, instructional, and outreach efforts in the areas of marriage and family relations, human development from infancy to later life, early childhood education, family financial management, and marriage and family therapy. In the last fiscal year, the department generated $9.5M in research, service, and outreach expenditures. Units within the department include the Adele and Dale Young Child Development Laboratory, which provides service for children and families, research, and training pre-professionals; the Dolores Doré Eccles Center for Early Care and Education provides high quality day care services and is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children; the Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic (MFT) provides therapy services to individuals, couples, and families; and Housing and Financial Counseling (HFC) services, which provides programs for first time home buyers, reverse mortgages, and debt management. The department is a proud partner of Cooperative Extension at Utah State University. Our faculty provide a variety of evidence-based family life education programs across the state. Signature program areas include stepfamily education, healthy relationships, and parenting.

 

Extension Specialists within the department and college oversee research-based programs around the state. Their relationship education programs include courses for individuals who are single, dating, married, divorced and remarried.
