Overview

The S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (QANR) is seeking a full-time Academic Advisor to join our student services team. This position will primarily advise undergraduate students in the Department of Wildland Resources.

 

The selected candidate will advise students with majors in the college and focus on:

  • Conservation & Restoration Ecology
  • Forest Ecology & Management
  • Rangeland Ecology & Management
  • Wildlife Ecology & Management

This position will also work with the college’s ambassadors, an energetic group of student leaders who represent QANR at events across campus and in the community. This position will help coordinate and support the QANR Student Ambassadors, helping them with leadership development, outreach, and recruitment activities on behalf of the college.

Responsibilities

  • Advise undergraduate students on academic requirements, course planning, and progress toward graduation.
  • Support students in clarifying and achieving their educational and career goals, including preparation for graduate school and employment.
  • Provide accurate information on general education, major, and minor requirements, as well as university policies and procedures.
  • Track and monitor student progress, communicate academic standing, and intervene when necessary to promote retention and success.
  • Collaboration with the departments.
  • Work closely with faculty, staff, and the QANR Student Services office to support student success, retention, and engagement.
  • Serve as the advisor to QANR Student Ambassadors, supporting their outreach, leadership, and engagement efforts.
  • Refer students to appropriate university resources for academic and personal support.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records.
  • Recommend students for awards, scholarships, and other recognition opportunities.
  • Participate in college and university recruitment events, orientation, graduation and other student-centered activities.
  • Provide excellent customer service and act as a student advocate.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, wildlife science, education, or related field.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A student-focused approach and enthusiasm for working with diverse learners.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in higher education, advising, student affairs, or related natural resources discipline.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to learn university systems (Banner, DegreeWorks, Navigate, Outlook, etc.).
  • Knowledge of student development, academic planning, and retention strategies.
  • Experience with advising, mentoring, or teaching students.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of curriculum requirements and university processes.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • A student-centered approach with the ability to build positive relationships.
