Overview

The Department of Technology, Design and Technical Education at Utah State University (USU) seeks candidates for a full-time, academic-year (9-month), non-tenure-track term lecturer position in the Engineering, Drafting, and Design Technology (EDDT) certificate program. The appointment is 95% teaching and 5% service. It is anticipated that the individual selected for this faculty position will start in January of 2026. The successful candidate for this position will teach a variety of technical drafting, mechanical drafting, and 3D modeling courses. As part of USU’s land grant mission to make academic programs accessible throughout the state, this position will be physically located at the USU Eastern campus in Price, Utah.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant for this position will teach, improve, and develop courses in the USU EDDT program with an emphasis on the Technical Certificate (TC) program offering. Instructional emphasis will be placed on providing excellent instruction and preparing students for both industry certification and successful careers as drafting technicians. Delivery methods may include face-to-face instruction, broadcasting courses to other statewide campus, and asynchronous online courses.  Specific courses within the work assignment will include, but are not limited to, technical drafting, computer-aided drafting (CAD), geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GDT), 3D-modeling, design for manufacturing, and manufacturing principles. The successful applicant must demonstrate expertise in the use of SolidWorks and AutoCAD. The successful candidate will also be expected to work collaboratively with other program faculty members to enhance the success of the EDDT program and students. Instruction to concurrent students, non-traditional students, and the local workforce as applicable will be expected. Examples may include teaching evening courses and non-credit instruction for local workforce development. Participation in university, college, and/or school/departmental activities is required as part of each USU faculty member’s service (5%) contribution requirements.

 

Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Designing, constantly improving, and delivering excellent instruction focused on systematically advancing the EDDT technical certificate program as a stackable credential toward an associate of applied science (AAS) and Bachelor of Science (BS) within the USU statewide campus system
  • Working collaboratively with other program faculty to prioritize student outcomes to guide the development and management of program curriculum within the EDDT technical certificate program
  • Teaching a variety drafting and design courses, with a specific emphasis on technical drafting, 3D modeling, and GDT, in accordance with applicable drafting standards - specifically ASME Y14.2 and ASME Y14.5
  • Teaching drafting and design courses specifically utilizing, but not limited to, SolidWorks and AutoCAD
  • Teaching traditional courses, concurrent enrollment courses, and noncredit courses as needed
  • Teaching courses that provide workforce training and industry validated credentials
  • Teaching and evaluating student performance in both a classroom and laboratory setting
  • Sharing in the management, maintenance, procurement, and improvement of EDDT equipment and facilities
  • Share in the coordination of biannual program advisory committee (PAC) meetings with industry partners
  • Serve on departmental, division, and university committees
  • Advise and recruit students
  • Share in the responsibility of tracking graduate job placement and earnings data
  • Actively participate in personal professional development to enhance both industry knowledge and teaching ability
  • Collaborating as a contributing member of a department and faculty team
  • Fulfilling other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Certificate of Completion (minimum 900-hour/30-credit, or equivalent) in drafting, modeling, or design, from a postsecondary institution
  • At least three years of industry or related experience where work is performed to recognized industry standards and is primarily focused on drafting and design. Up to one additional year of postsecondary education may be substituted for one year of qualifying work experience
  • SolidWorks CAD Design Associate (CSWA) credential, or the ability to obtain the certification within one year of hire date
  • Autodesk AutoCAD Certified User (ACU), or the ability to obtain the certification within one year of hire date
  • The ability to create 2D mechanical prints and 3D models from provided or existing objects
  • The ability to create 2D mechanical prints from 3D models, and vice versa
  • In-depth understanding of drafting standards and conventions standardized by ASME Y14.2 and ASME Y14.5
  • Teaching-focused candidate who understands, and is committed to, the mission of USU Eastern

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AS or AAS degree in drafting, design, or a very closely related field from an accredited school
  • Experience teaching drafting and design at a post-secondary level
  • CSWA
  • Experience with additive manufacturing
  • Experience with CNC machining
  • Experience with Fusion 360
  • An ability to set specific departmental goals and develop related curriculum
