Overview

The Deputy Athletic Director for Strategic Operations is a senior leader in the Department of Athletics, overseeing and executing the department's internal functions to ensure efficient operations, promote student-athlete welfare, and guarantee compliance with institutional, conference, and NCAA policies. Reporting to the Vice President and Director of Athletics, this position is instrumental in shaping departmental culture, fostering operational excellence, and supporting the success of student-athletes, coaches, and staff through collaborative leadership.

Responsibilities

Departmental Leadership & Strategic Planning:

  • Serve on the executive leadership team, contributing to strategy development, goal setting, and implementation.
  • Act as liaison between the Director of Athletics and internal units to ensure effective communication and operational alignment.
  • Represent the department on institutional committees and at conference/NCAA meetings as assigned.
  • Advise the Athletics Director on departmental matters and lead long-range planning.
  • Oversee budgets and supervise staff within areas of responsibility.

Staff Culture:

  • Lead diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives.
  • Foster relationships with university partners, senior leadership, and stakeholders.
  • Enhance departmental efficiency and compliance through effective policies and procedures.

Departmental Administration:

  • Provide direct administrative oversight of assigned internal units, including supervision of and management of resource allocation.
  • Support the operations to ensure alignment with departmental goals.
  • Manage key departmental contracts and oversee budgets.

Sport Administration:

  • Provide direct administrative supervision of assigned sport programs, including supervision of head coaches and management of resource allocation.
  • Support coaches in program operations to ensure alignment with departmental goals.
  • Manage key departmental contracts and oversee sport budgets.
  • Promote a student-first approach to foster well-being, inclusion, and academic achievement.
  • Oversee a comprehensive sport administration program providing oversight to all sport administrators.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in athletics administration or a related field, with demonstrated leadership.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends with occasional travel required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Sport Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience in NCAA Division I, FBS athletics administration.
  • Knowledge of NCAA regulations and compliance.
  • Familiarity with Utah State University policies and procedures.
