Overview

The Deputy Athletic Director/Chief Revenue Officer is a senior leader in the Department of Athletics, responsible for the strategic direction, management, and execution of all external functions of the Department of Athletics. Reporting to the Vice President and Director of Athletics, this position oversees revenue generation, brand enhancement, community engagement, and fan experience through collaborative leadership of areas including marketing, communications, ticketing, sponsorships, development, and media relations. As a member of the department’s executive leadership team, this individual works closely with the Director of Athletics to support the department’s strategic priorities and ensure alignment with the mission and values of Utah State University.

Responsibilities

Departmental Leadership & Strategic Planning:

  • Serve as the primary external affairs strategist, developing and implementing comprehensive plans for growth in revenue, engagement, and brand visibility.
  • Provide executive oversight to units including marketing & promotions, communications and media relations, ticket operations, corporate sponsorships, and athletics development/fundraising.
  • Represent the Athletics Department at institutional, conference, community, and alumni events as needed.
  • Collaborate with campus partners such as University Advancement, Communications, and other campus constituents to align messaging and outreach.

Revenue Generation:

  • Drive strategic efforts to maximize revenue through ticket sales, sponsorships, merchandise, and philanthropic support.
  • Work closely with the athletics development team to cultivate major gift prospects and stewardship strategies.
  • Oversee negotiation and fulfillment of sponsorship agreements, multimedia rights, and broadcast partnerships.

Management & Supervision:

  • Supervise a diverse team of external operations staff, fostering a high-performance culture through clear expectations, accountability, and professional development.
  • Manage budgets for all external units in alignment with departmental goals and institutional policies.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in sports management, business, communications, or related field.
  • 7 plus years of progressive experience in intercollegiate athletics or professional sports, with a focus on external operations.
  • Major gift experience.
  • Demonstrated success in revenue generation, brand development, or fan engagement.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and build relationships with diverse stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience at the NCAA Division I level.
  • Knowledge of emerging trends in digital media, fan engagement, and NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) landscape.
