Overview

The College of Engineering at Utah State University invites communication professionals to join our marketing and public relations team. The Public Relations Specialist creates editorial and promotional content that reflects the College of Engineering’s reputation as a premier organization dedicated to teaching, research, and outreach. This is a writing-intensive role that requires highly developed communication skills. The specialist frequently interviews faculty members, researchers, and students across a range of disciplines to develop information assets for news blogs, articles, marketing materials, social media, and more. Ideal candidates have excellent interpersonal and storytelling skills and can manage a consistent workload of writing tasks. The specialist works with guidance from the Marketing Director and is part of a communications team which includes a full-time graphic designer, a full-time social media producer, a full-time web developer, and student assistants. This position is located in the Dean’s Office of the College of Engineering. The job is fun and dynamic, and our work environment is relaxed and inclusive.

 

The role is full time and 100 percent on-site at the USU Logan campus with regular Monday-Friday scheduling. Remote/telework work is not available for this role as it requires consistent, in-person engagement with the campus community. 

Responsibilities

1. News and Information

  • News Blog: Produce high quality, consistent blog entries about academic success, research, student life, college and university news, engineering news, faculty success, college prominence, and other highlights that fortify USU’s position as a leader in engineering education
  • Develop a storytelling strategy that elevates USU and the college’s strategic communication goals
  • Email Newsletters: Coordinate the production of email marketing content to various audiences, including alumni, students, faculty, industry, media, community, and government groups
  • Alumni Magazine: Lead the production of an annual alumni magazine that features engaging stories about the college and its alumni
  • Dissemination: Develop and execute a strategic dissemination plan that amplifies and disseminates your storytelling to more audiences, such as influencers, thought leaders, and relevant news media organizations

2. Marketing and Recruiting Support

  • In collaboration with the recruiting team, provide support for recruiting initiatives targeting prospective students and prospective faculty members
  • Develop copy for use in web pages, brochures, documents, marketing collateral, video and audio scripts, emails, and everyday communications

3. Special Events and Advancement Support

  • Develop communication assets that support special event programming and university advancement operations, such as fundraisers, alumni gatherings, guest speaker series, press conferences, commemorations, student events, community outreach events, etc.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, marketing, advertising, communications, or a related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and professional experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years’ experience in a professional media production environment such as a newspaper, radio or TV station, professional content creation, or similar experience at an advertising or creative agency
  • Experienced in storytelling: You find new and engaging ways to attract readers, and you are comfortable interviewing people and finding the right voice for each story.

  • Superior knowledge of contemporary writing conventions
  • Familiarity with Associated Press writing style
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and writing abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and document management
  • Ability to use Canva and Adobe tools
