Overview

Information Technology at Utah State University is seeking a creative individual to join a dynamic and fun team within IT that creates and maintains innovative websites using the University’s central content management system, Modern Campus CMS. The successful applicant will work directly with web support clients across campus, supervise student employees, and serve as a collaborative team member or project lead as assigned, utilizing Modern Campus CMS and other web evaluation tools. The ability to organize, plan, and manage projects from start to finish, to understand programming languages and frameworks, to be a self-starter, and to apply creative solutions is a must. Candidates with experience, and those with the attitude and aptitude to learn quickly, will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with clients to discuss website projects, including evaluation of feature requirements and technical specifications, and advise on content layout best practices
  • Support clients with a variety of web requests, including content updates, page layout adjustments, and the build-out of new sections and sites
  • Provide training and implementation support for website accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1) as per University policy
  • Coach and mentor student programmers on best practices and programming standards
  • Utilize graphic design tools to develop features to be used within the University CMS
  • Work closely and collaboratively with members of other IT teams
  • Maintain a positive, friendly, and cooperative attitude while working in a fast-paced, team-oriented, deadline-driven environment
  • Assist with or lead varied development projects for the University
  • Be proficient or able to quickly become proficient in HTML, CSS, XSLT, and JavaScript
  • Adhere to IT core competencies (http://it.usu.edu/core-competencies/)
  • Other duties as assigned

Please note that the specific duties and responsibilities for each position on the Web Team are prioritized based on the University's needs, as determined through internal discussions and input from our governance group. The primary focus of this position is to:

  1. Provide support for campus clients who have contracted with our team to provide full website support in our CMS
  2. Evaluate existing USU websites to guide improvements in accessibility, usability, and branding.

This includes the guidance, development, and implementation of tools and platform features to support this focus.
The successful candidate will also support and train student staff working on current priority projects and USU departmental staff tasked with updating their web content, as well as support overall improvements to USU websites to meet the needs of their particular audiences.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Programmer I:
    • Bachelor's degree in an IT-related field from an accredited 4-year institution; OR an equivalent* combination of education plus experience is required
  • Programmer II:
    • Bachelor's degree plus 2 years of experience in an IT-related field from an accredited 4-year institution; OR an equivalent* combination of experience plus education is required
    • Holds appropriate certifications and/or demonstrates equivalent knowledge in the area of expertise
  • Programmer III:
    • Bachelor's degree plus 4 years of experience in an IT-related field from an accredited 4-year institution; OR an equivalent* combination of education plus experience is required
    • Holds appropriate certifications and/or demonstrates equivalent knowledge in the area of expertise
  • Proven experience analyzing, developing, testing, and maintaining websites, including:
    • Web accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA) best practices
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
    • Ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to a non-technical audience
    • Excellent customer service skills
    • Ability to work with limited supervision, as well as collaboratively
    • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines

*One year of education is equivalent to one year of experience for the combination of both education and experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Proven experience in some or all of the following:

  • Content management system development
  • Cross-platform browser compatibility and testing
  • Bootstrap
  • UX/UI
  • PHP
  • Figma or another similar design tool
  • AI tools to streamline workflows
